Abstract
The author contends that while in the Soviet Union and in post-Soviet Russia people had a deep and sometimes even emotional interest in American culture and the American people, in the U.S. interest for Russia was but a reflection of the political situation in the relationship between these countries. According to the author, this asymmetry can be explained by the difference between collectivist (Russia) and individualist (USA) nature of cultures. The article also provides characteristics of American patriotism and exceptionalism.
