Abstract
The 2016 primaries in the United States were unusual in many respects. Two candidates - Bernie Sanders on the democratic side and Donald Trump on the republican side-were anti-establishment candidates. Although Bernie Sanders had conducted an outstanding campaign and won primaries in 20 states, he had no real chance against Hillary Clinton as it was clear from the beginning. Donald Trump on the contrary despite much opposition within the Republican Party had convincingly won the primaries tapping into the frustration and anger of the considerable part of Republican base. But in general election, as polls show, he trails Clinton because in the course of the campaign he systematically alienated big demographic groups-women, Hispanic, young people - that the Republican Party needs to retake the white House. Nevertheless by the time of the beginning of the Republican Convention on July 18 Donald Trump had managed to significantly reduce the gap with Clinton. That promises intense and obstinate fight between the two candidates right to the election day on November 8.
