Abstract
The Caribbean crisis (U.S. equivalent – Cuban missile crisis) in October 1962 was qualified as a historical event of the global magnitude. It happened during the Cold War and played the cornerstone role in its further development. The Caribbean crisis could serve as a trigger similar to the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo in June 1914 which had lead to the 1 st World War. Instead, further aggravation of U.S.-Soviet confrontation has slowed down and went in the direction of minimization of the conflict and optimization of cooperation. The article chronicles events of October 1962, studies the moves by the actors, and – as the most important factor – looks for an explanation of the decisions taken by the main actors aimed at settling the conflict peacefully.
