Abstract
Relations between the U.S. and Japan during the period after Commodore Perry persuaded Japan to open the country, developed in the context of a clash between two extremely different civilizations and levels of political culture. Complexity of the situation was aggravated by a crisis of political stability in Japan which ended with a collapse of the existing power and beginning of modernization and speeded up transition from feudalism to capitalism.
